Workers of the World...

We've finally reached the official end of summer, with the start of a new month. They have to have it at the end of a month, so that we notice, since the weather has been rotten all "summer." I should probably have shouted "rabbit", or is that on the first Tuesday of the month?

Anyway someone, who shall remain nameless (for the time being), emailed me to gloat about Americans getting the Monday off when the rest of us poor sods had to struggle in to work.

So I checked my calendar, and indeed, folks in the US are celebrating "Labor" Day. (In Canada there is a similar festival called "Labour Day, eh?"). Apparently the one thing that people don't do on labour day, is, erm, labour, i.e. work. This accounts for the lack of blogging activity, though it didn't stop Bee being first on Chris's blog, which I think was a bit unsporting when she should be lying around taking it easy (at least until I'd got a comment in).

I can hardly complain about the concept of people having days off - it's all very civilised. I think, though, that we should reconsider the names of our holidays and make them a bit less, well, boring. We call most of ours "bank holidays", and lots of us get time off who don't work in banks. They can't be celebrations of banks, surely?

Suggestions for renaming days would be welcomed. I'm going to start by proposing that Americans call today "Idle Day". Not only does the name conjure up a picture of blissful inactivity, but it could double as a celebration of Monty Python. And then we'd have to celebrate it in Britain as well. Which would be an end to gloating emails.

Happy Idle Day to my North American readers, and anyone else who's been lucky enough to have a lazy day. I would have posted this greeting earlier, but some of us had to go to work...

Yes, I did have last Monday off, but I didn't gloat about it...

Have you had a good day?

Bee said...

Yeah, went to see Tropic Thunder. The best part was to due to my spiritual leader, Tom Cruise.

That looks good - I might get round to seeing it a few years after they bring out the DVD... I tend to be a bit behind with these things ;-)

I know, I know. I'm still catching up - there are still 3 Hitchcock films from the the 20s and 30s I've not seen yet, so I've got a bit of a way to go yet before I get to 2008 ;-)

Your fingers are celebrating Labor Day by not working...

Hey Brian? Um, what are those two hotair balloons doing to each other? And why is that one oddly shaped? Am I missing something?

For me, one this exact day seven years ago, it really was Labor Day for me because today was the day Emma was born. So, I still call it Labor Day, it just has a different meaning than everyone elses.
I think that we should have a world wide celebration of Rambling Acres University Day. That way, we can all have the day off. Except for my staff and the nanny of course. Things must still go on at RAU!

I'm good with Idle Day. I absolutely conformed to the pursuits of Idle Day today. However, I think we could also get away with calling it "Stupid Sales At The Stores Day," too. I realize, of course, that that name would take up way too much space in those little calendar boxes, so you're right, Idle Day is much more accurate AND it's concise!

Tracy:

The picture is apparently supposed to be an elephant. It's something from Monty Python. Like you, I'm too young to remember much about it.

You should magnanimously give all your staff the day off, and do the work yourself. To show what a great boss you are.

FADKOG:

The other problem with SSATS day, is that there are quite a few of those. At least, there are here ;-)

Python deserve their own separate holiday... where we would serve Albatros and Spam and sing about The Bright Side of Life (plus, we'd all, including Canadians , eh? get an extra day off).

We should be glad those Americans don't get so many holidays otherwise neither of us would be first. Check that Bee! The first four posts!

Damn it woman, stop that grasp for world domination!

An extra day? I hadn't thought of that. Excellent idea...

Chris:

Maybe they should turn off the internet in America during public holidays?
